ENG 1D (Academic) There are many great heroes in novels, but one hero stands above them all. Bilbo Baggins, a selfless, fearless and up most bravest character I have ever read about, and I have read thousands of books/novels. Bilbo is a Hobbit, (someone who is shorter in height and has wooly feet) who is taken out of his comfort zone and put into the wild in the adventurous book. Bilbo must take all of his heroic characteristics and help his new friends on their journey.
I think Bilbo is the best hero that I have ever read about because he is selfless. I know this because Biblo is willing to save his friends even when he has a chance to escape on his own. Bilbo always put his friends first and sometimes he forgets about his own safety. This happened when Bilbo was rescuing his friends from the elves by putting them into barrels to flow out through the sewage pipe but forgot to get into one himself. Bilbo had to quickly jump into one to save his own life. Selflessness is an act of kindness towards others and Bilbo possesses both of these qualities/traits. Bilbo shows his act of selflessness while the antagonist, otherwise known as Smaug, likes to be greedy and keep everything to himself. This makes Smaug and Bilbo polar opposites, Smaug likes to keep everything to himself showing acts of greed and selfishness while Bilbo puts others before him showing acts of kindness and selflessness.
Bilbo shows how selflessness he can be, but in order to be selfless, he needs bravery. I know for a fact that Bilbo is very brave and for not just one reason. He sticks up for others, even when afraid (which is rare) he pulls it together and he quickly thinks about the situation and how to resolve it. Bilbo shows this when he follows behind the elves and quickly thinks of a plan while he provides information between the dwarves while they are captured. This reminds me of a different book I had read, when someone stronger is being followed by the hero of that book who is not as strong. This connection to Bilbo is strong as he even sets up a deal with the leader of the Lakemen known as Bard to stop a war that doesn’t need to happen. Bilbo knows that bravery means to face your fears and have courage to act on a situation and Bilbo does just that by getting by a golem, running and fighting off goblins to even rescue his friends from evil elves through a sewage pipe! And just like before, Smaug doesn’t show acts of bravery, he shows acts of anger and rage just like when he attacked the Lakemen, while Bilbo summed up the courage and became brave enough to talk to a dragon and even insult it!
Bilbo shows bravery and selflessness but there is still one thing that Bilbo needed to become the greatest hero on this adventure, and that was fearlessness. I know that Bilbo has this fearlessness inside him and he unleashed it in this book. Bilbo was brought out of his comfort zone, forced to fight things stronger than him, had to rescue his friends countless times and had to run from a dragon. He even states that “We are plain quiet folk and have no use for adventures.” (P#6) In Spite all of that, Bilbo had little to no fear and conquered all the wrong turns on his path and succeeded in his goal of helping his friend on his adventure. He even proved himself wrong! Throughout his adventure, he showed fearlessness through the whole adventure and had some fun while doing it. Even if he lost some of his friends during the battle of the goblins vs the dwarves, the Lakemen and the eagles. Bilbo took his fear and turned it into something greater then he ever thought possible.
In the end, Biblo conquered his fears, showed acts of selflessness and even proved to everyone (Including himself) that bravery is just a part of his life. Bilbo had talked to a dragon, rescued his friends countless times and made smart decisions to end wars and battles. Bilbo knew when to act as he knew that some actions would have consequences and the few actions that didn’t was his time to act. Bilbo showed that he was a useful ally to the dwarves and Lakemen as he stopped a war that was not needed, helped bring everyone together to slay the goblins, brought a dragon out of hiding, fought off a golem and made good decisions throughout all his actions.
ENG 1P (Applied) Are Heroes Born Or Made?
I think heroes are made because people can change and be better than themselves. Heroes are people that know they can be better and that know they can change and learn to help others. People can be made into heroes and others can learn from people that have changed. Heroes can be made. And anyone can be different.
People can change, for example: this man Kevin Mitnick was on the FBI’s most wanted list then just a few years later he opened his own security firm made to protect people. Point being is that people can learn to change and anyone can be made into someone thought would never be possible. Others probably need more time and more motivation to change for the better and even though it may take some time people can change.
People have been known to change after a traumatic event. After being or going through a traumatizing experience, people would tend to have different perspectives on life in general and change and rethink about their past choices and try to become a better person. People can change even if they're made of stone.
People could also want to change for themselves. People could realize that if they change for themselves the people around them could be happier or even want to be a part of that person's life. They could change to save themselves from any wrongs they have done in their life. People could just not want to be the person they are now so they change for the better.
So in conclusion, people can change their way of thinking and people can change their mind set and anyone can be a hero if they try and put the effort into actually wanting to be a better person. Heroes can be made
ENG 1L (Locally Developed) One character that is a hero
Sully is a guy that saved a lot of people. Sully is a hero because he had to crash a plane with 150 passengers into the Hudson River because of birds flying into both of the engines. When the birds hit he was to low to the ground to turn back to the airport. If he tried to make it back he would of crashed into a building.
Sully could of killed a lot a of people by going back to the airport like he is supposed to do but he was to low to the ground and if he did he would of crashed into a building and killed 150 people. After he crash into the river every got on boat and went to land. He made sure that everyone was of the plane a on the raft or people would of drowned.
It was hard after he crashed into the river because a lot of people were filming him. He had to go to court a few time because people thought he was drunk and people thought that he could of made it back to the airport. He had to think fast because if he didn’t he would have to try to go back possibly crash. He had PDSD (prolonged duress stress disorder) because of the crash.
In conclusion Sully saved 150 people from a plane crash. Sully could of killed a lot of people going back to the airport. It was hard for Sully after the crash.
